Gothic from Cathedral to Graffiti with Renee Alexander


In this workshop students will be introduced to the Gothic hands, in particular Textura and Fraktur. An historical overview of these two Gothic styles will give students context for modernizing the hand. Students will have an opportunity to create a word pattern.

About the Instructor

Renée Alexander brings over 30 years of calligraphy expertise to her North Vancouver hand-lettering studio.  She has worked for Government Institutes, Professional Associations, Graphic Designers, Universities as well as private commissions.

After receiving her art diploma in Vancouver, she spent a summer studying at Imperial College in London under Ann Hechle and later studied for two consecutive summers under Sheila Waters in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Renée has also studied at Cheerio’s Calligraphy Centre under master lettering artist, John Stevens and has taken workshops from other top lettering artists including Denis Brown, Julian Waters and Yves Leterme.

Renée is a faculty member in the Continuing Studies Department at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. She has also taught at Capilano University, the WOOL Conference sponsored by Westcoast Calligraphy Society and local Guilds.

Materials List


  • A variety of sized nibs from Mitchel size 2 round hand or equivalent to larger chisel pens up to 1⁄4” – please bring the make(s) you are comfortable using.
  • Chisel brush – 1⁄2 inch – Windsor Newton Series 995
  • Larger chisel brushes (optional)
  • Roll of Ikea Mala paper or a roll of Craft paper not exceeding 2 feet in width
  • Tracing paper
  • Inexpensive white practice paper 11” x 14”
  • Rives BFK paper cut to 11” x 14” – several sheets
  • Good black paper such as Canson Ingres #50 Stygian Black cut to 11” x 14”
  • Dr. Martin’s permanent white
  • Gouache – red oxide, ivory black and paynes gray
  • Mixing and filling brushes
  • Water containers
  • Soapstone pencil
  • Metal ruler – 24”
  • Mars Staedtler white eraser
  • HB pencil preferably a technical pencil
  • Mixing pots preferably with lids like small jam jars
  • Water containers
  • Soap to clean brushes
